4 Ways to Pray More Effectively and Feel God’s Presence Today

pray more effectively

As we step into a new year, many people take time to set resolutions, aiming to improve different aspects of their lives.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with setting goals and striving to be better.

Personally, I’ve done this several times, but in 2025, my focus has been on learning to pray more effectively.

It’s not that I don’t pray, but compared to Bible reading—where I can study for hours without distraction—prayer has sometimes been a struggle.

My mind tends to wander quickly when I pray.

To help me grow in this area, I’ve been studying different approaches to prayer and learning from others.

One of the biggest changes I’ve made is creating a prayer list, something I hadn’t done before.

This simple habit has helped me stay focused and remember those who have asked for prayer.

Prayer is not just a religious obligation—it’s a beautiful and powerful connection with

the Creator of the universe.

It’s an opportunity to communicate with our Heavenly Father, who longs to spend time with us.

It’s a time to pour out our deepest emotions to the One who has the power to transform our lives.

It’s also a moment to be still and listen for His wisdom, guidance, and healing.

Since embarking on this journey to strengthen my prayer life, I’ve experienced incredible moments where I’ve felt God meet me in those times.

There are moments when time seems to fade away, and I find myself caught up in His presence.

I leave those prayer times feeling refreshed and strengthened.

Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. If you want to grow in your prayer life, here are a few key principles that can make your prayers more effective:

4 Principles to Pray More Effectively

1. Believe in Who He Is

Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

This might seem obvious, but many people struggle with truly believing in the true God—the

God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Some create their own version of God based on their personal views rather than the truth revealed in Scripture.

When we come to God in prayer, we must believe He is who He says He is. Without faith, prayer loses its foundation.

2. Believe When You Pray

Mark 11:24

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

It’s not just believing in God; we must also have faith that He hears us and is able to answer

our prayers.

Sometimes we pray with an attitude of wishful thinking rather than true faith.

But Jesus made it clear—we must believe when we pray.

Whether it’s healing, provision, or direction, we need to trust that the moment we pray, God is at work.

In our church, we set aside time for prayer after worship, inviting people to come forward for

prayer and agreement.

But it’s just as important that those receiving prayer have faith that God is moving on their behalf.

We always encourage them to return to their seats with thanksgiving, believing their request has been heard and answered.

This is an act of faith, just as Jesus described in Mark 11.

3. Pray with Authority

Matthew 21:21–22

And Jesus answered them, Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.

There are moments when we ask God to intervene in situations where He has already given us authority to act in faith.

Through Jesus Christ, we have the authority to declare healing, speak against obstacles, and rebuke things that hinder our walk with God.

When we look at the book of Acts, we see the apostles walking in this authority—healing the

sick and performing miracles through faith in Jesus.

That same authority is given to us today.

When we recognize what Christ has made available to us, our prayers take on a new dimension of confidence and boldness.

4. Pray with Thanksgiving

Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

This is one of my favorite scriptures, and I’ve preached on it many times.

Thanksgiving in prayer is powerful! It’s easy to be thankful when things are going well, but true faith expresses gratitude even in difficult seasons.

We can thank God in advance for what He is going to do, and we can reflect on how far He has already brought us.

Scripture teaches us to bring our requests to God, but those requests should be wrapped in

thanksgiving.

Gratitude strengthens our faith and shifts our focus from our problems to God’s faithfulness.

Conclusion

Prayer is not about following a rigid formula but about developing a relationship with God.

It’s a daily opportunity to connect with Him, grow in faith, and see His power at work in our lives.

As I continue on this journey of deepening my prayer life, I encourage you to do the same.

No matter where you are in your walk with God, take steps to pray more effectively and make it a more meaningful part of your life.

He is always listening, and He is always faithful!
